I received the following in my e-mail. It was written by a policeman. I'll leave you to come to your own conclusions.

I read this on the net tonight, kind of worrying. Data protection and all that!!
I will be opting out!
"The government wants to upload everyone's medical records onto a national database.
I'm waiting for a reaction.
I'll say that again - THE GOVERNMENT WANT TO UPLOAD EVERYONE'S MEDICAL RECORDS ONTO A NATIONAL DATABASE!!!!!
What's wrong with that? Well, once you are on it, your medical records will be accessible to over 1 million people who work for the NHS, plus various NHS contractors, plus countless temporary staff from agencies, summer students and so on. Plus pharmacies and the girls behind the counter, as well as dentists and their staff and a host of other people. The computer system they will be uploaded onto will be Internet based and so, regardless as to what security systems they install, any decent hacker will take a whole seven minutes to get in to it.
These medical records are supposed to be viewed by your GP only. And maybe his immediate staff - but that's it. You have an unwritten understanding with your GP that nobody else will have access to your records.
You are police officers - do you want any cretin with a grudge against you to have access to your and your family’s intimate medical details?
The time when you were on antidepressants or your wife was treated for alcoholism?
Or your daughter's abortion? Or the fact that you have piles? If you were born with an intersex condition?
Doctors don't want to upload these records because they believe it undermines their relationships with their patients and is contrary to their ethics. The government have basically told the BMA to get stuffed because they are getting paid and they do as they're told. Nevertheless, so much pressure has been put on the government that, just two days ago, they relented (partly) and agreed that people would have a chance to opt out,
BUT YOU HAVE TO DO IT VERY SOON! Once you are on the system - you stay on it!
So how do you get off it? Well, go to this site:
http://www.nhsconfidentiality.org.
On it, you'll find a link which says letter.
Click on that and scroll down. Then, input your name and address, and your doctor's details, and click "create letter".
Make sure your printer is turned on and print the letter. Sign it and send it to your GP. Do the same for every member of your household. This letter has been designed by doctors, so they know exactly how your demand should be framed in order to ensure compliance.
OK, I know it’s Christmas and we’ve all got lots of other things to think about (why do you think they announced this right just before Christmas?) but do it anyway. It needs to be with your GP before the end of February.
Remember, most doctors are choosing to opt out for themselves and their families - just as are nearly all MPs! Ask yourself why.
