Timmy has some simple rules at the head of this forum. They are good, simple, sensible rules.

The forum has had its ups and downs over the years, but by and large it has acquired a reputation for tolerance, humour and interesting and at times fairly profound debate.

Clearly, in any open-ended community each individual will find some people he likes, some about whom his feelings are neutral, and maybe one or two whom he dislikes. That's inevitable. If you dislike someone, neither Timmy nor anyone else can prevent you from carrying on a war of words by e-mail, but your personal dislikes should NOT be aired in the forum. It embarrasses other posters and may drive some away. It will certainly discourage new posters. Certainly it makes those responsible look foolish.

No-one should feel that he has the right to say whatever he likes; such arrogance puts him on a level with the appalling Fred Phelps. Backbiting and sniping has destroyed several useful forums over the years. This forum has brought a great deal of pleasure - and in some cases some real support - to far more people than the number of regular posters would suggest. Civilised argument is fine, cheap insults are not.

Timmy has had a harrowing time in recent weeks and months. Without him there would be no forum. Please respect his wishes and ensure that your posts are courteous and considerate; that is the least we can do to express our appreciation of his site. He has enough on his plate without worrying about what is going on here.

PLEASE think about this carefully. If I, as a long-term contributor, feel that catching up tonight was an unpleasant experience, how much more distateful must it seem to an irregular visitor?

Put bluntly, if your ego is too big to play nice, then go play someplace else.

For a' that an' a' that,
It's comin' yet for a' that,
That man tae man, the worrld o'er
Shall brithers be, for a' that.
