The social expectation of presents that puts a debt in ones finances so deep that one ends up getting late fees for bills and overdrawn fees for bank accounts.

Money sucks.

Frankly, we think such laws are silly. They do young people more harm than good. How can you possibly ask questions on a gay forum without coming out to your parents if you need consent?
