On this date, April 18, 1865, General Joseph E. Johnston, Confederates States Army, his troops greatly outnumbered and at the utter end of their endurance as a fighting force, surrendered to General William T. Sherman near Durham in our State of North Carolina, and thus ended the last organized Confederate military operations in the eastern area.

In grateful and loving remembrance of the men of the State of North Carolina who, at the call of Duty as they understood it, left their homes and fields and workshops, their families and their friends, and served their State and Confederacy bravely to the end.
"We have fought this fight as long, and as well as we know how. We have been defeated. For us as a Christian people, there is now but one course to pursue. We must accept the situation."
General Robert E. Lee, Confederate States Army
