The UK Home Secretary, Jaqui Smith, has granted political asylum to a 19 year old Iranian who is afraid to return home. In 2005 Mehdi Kazemi arrived in London to study English. His lover, still in Iran, was arrested and hanged for being homosexual.
But I don't understand how this could be: only last year the Iranian president told the American people that there were no gays in Iran.
