I too was diagnosed with diabetes 2 two years ago. My reaction is not shock, but disbelief. I don't want to tempt fate, but after thorough examinations when taking part in a research study I tick one box - sugar in the blood - absolutely none of the others.

The doctors knew I had sugar in my blood (not in my urine though) for years, but didn't do anything about it until a government initiative paid GPs more for diagnosing it. I have tried arguing my case, but because I tick that one box I'm on a loser. I have been threatened with insulin use in five years' time.

With the headline of 1 in 6 NHS diagnoses are wrong in the newspapers this week my disbelief continues. I go along with 'treatment' just in case and of course I get priority treatment in certain other areas - flu jab, pneumonia vaccination for instance.

I dream of boys with big bulges in their trousers,
Never of girls with big bulges in their blouses.

…and look forward to meeting you in Cóito.
