By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Dec 1 | The Washington D.C. City Council in its first of two votes on the issue of allowing same-sex marriage in the nation's capital, passed the bill 11 to 2. Council members Marion Barry (Ward Eight) and Yvette Alexander (Ward Seven) were the only dissenting votes against the measure.

D. C. City Councilmen @ Large Phil Mendelson stated that he expects that the second and final vote later this month will also pass, and D.C.'s Mayor, Adrian Fenty, has already stated that he intends to sign the measure into law.

According to a spokesperson for the City Clerk's office, Marriages would begin in the city as soon as the bill passes a period of Congressional review. Most likely in late February or by March 1st, 2010.

A spokesperson for House Speaker Nancy Peloisi-(D) California indicated that Congress will likely not alter the law and that it will take effect after the 30 day Congressional review period.

The District will join Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Connecticut who already allow same-sex marriage. New Hampshire will join them Jan. 1.
