I had a long phone conversation with Brody today. In a few ways, it was enlightening. I hope it was equally relavent for him. During that phone call, I shit you not, my nextdoor neighbor began playing, rather loudly, "I'm coming out," during a point in the conversation that actually was about "coming out."
And then, about an hour after that conversation, while I was thinking about a radio program I listen to at night, the Derek and Romaine show on the OutQ satellite radio network (Sirius 109 for sure, I believe it's XM 98 ), a movie came on the TV that was simply too coincidental for me. The Laramie Project, which is the story of the aftermath of the attack and susequent death of Matthew Shepard. This is coincidental because one of the hosts of Derek and Romaine, Romaine Patterson, knew Matthew Shepard, as a close friend. She also has directly confronted and in my opinion trumped the actions of Fred Phelps and his church protesting the trial of the two young men who were convicted of killing Matthew.
Now I'm not attributing any special, cosmic significance to these events. Lately, with all of the talk about bullying gay or suspected gay youth to the point of ultimate despair and the intense political situations going on in the United States at this moment, I find myself questioning my positions. Yeah, the gripes about gay marriage and traditional values are thrown in as well, but I just wonder how often we recharge our batteries about such things.
We need to keep an eye on the present as well as remember the past. Brody, I think you need to write a book. Or at least get one ghost written. Your insights about Harvey Milk should be as important as the Laramie Project and Romaine's Angelic stand against Phelps and his crew. We all could use a little inspiration about now.

It's not the wolf you see you should fear, but all the ones he howls with. Don't be afraid of the song, but don't piss off the choir.
