For me, it was the story equivalent of a delightful culinary amuse-bouche.
Small but packed with flavour, including a spicy taste of Halloween eeriness.
Although short, I think it's beautifully crafted, without any wasted words.
Actually, I'm jealous because I wish that I'd written it!

I have to say I liked this story by Merkin, too. Nice surprise ending, didn't see it coming. Bit of Twilight Zone, but without Serling's rough edges. Great Halloween tale, that will bring a catch to your breath at the close.

Thank you. I am very grateful for the praise of "Payback." As with any tale that is heart-felt in its origin, there are parts of it that are true, parts that are less true, and parts that are not true at all. For example, I am not a pediatrician.

I'll pile on with the others--what an amazing story! Very reminicent of the Twilight Zone or Night Gallery (I'm showing my age!). I especially appreciate the very concise nature of the story--as Winston Churchill may have said "If I'd had more time I would written a shorter letter."
